Valley Metro

Visualisation of the inside of the Valley Metro redevelopment

Cardno has provided, and continues to provide, a range of highly-specialised planning, engineering and design consultancy services to LaSalle Investment Management on a significant urban renewal project in inner-city Brisbane; the Valley Metro Redevelopment in Fortitude Valley.

We assisted LaSalle with their development application strategy and provided consultancy services to inform masterplan design, given the complexity of the project in one of Brisbane city’s busiest transport, pedestrian and commercial corridors. Two initial development applications were lodged with Brisbane City Council, the first for a 30 story residential tower and the second for a 24 storey commercial building, both with substantial improvements to the ground plane. A subsequent development application has been lodged for podium entertainment uses, which will activate the front entry to the precinct.

The Valley Metro site sits above the Fortitude Valley railway station, Brisbane’s third busiest, and the Clem 7 road tunnel. Our structural engineers had to design a range of advanced solutions to the complex loading constraints posed by constructing two towers on top of these two vital pieces of subsurface transport infrastructure.

Our traffic engineers also had to innovate, resolving a number of highly technical issues stemming from the site’s multiple street frontages, an on-site public car park, accommodating car parking around other transport infrastructure and the high volume of vehicle and pedestrian use.

The Cardno Building Services team worked hard with LaSalle to design a cost effective way of upgrading the existing Transport House which sits on the site, together with services inputs to the two major towers.

Cardno is proud of our urban renewal capabilities demonstrated in these two successful development applications, which form part of a larger progressive redevelopment, incorporating further upgrades to the existing retail centre above the rail station and other commercial, retail and hospitality options around the site.

The Valley Metro Redevelopment is a transformative, suburb-defining project; turning an underutilised, tired inner-city area into one of Brisbane’s most vibrant mixed-use precincts.
