US 19 Highway Design

Cardno's full range of engineering services resulted in a highly successful project with enhanced Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.

US 19 is a north-south, six-lane divided arterial in Hernando County. Cardno was selected to provide professional engineering services to the Florida Department of Transportation for milling and resurfacing and widening a 3.7 mile segment of US 19 from CR 578 to Toucan Trail.

Cardno provided engineering services for the roadway, drainage, signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting design for this project, as well as right of way mapping and SUE services.

There are five signalized intersections within the project limits along with five non-signalized intersections. The purpose of the project was to extend the service life of this roadway and address any ADA deficiencies along the corridor. Part of this project was to perform a study to determine the multi-modal needs along this corridor.

The primary challenge was to design for additional widening and sidewalk within the existing right of way, while minimizing conflicts with the nine utilities along the project. A major concern was that the existing ditches were permitted treatment facilities and any impact to the volumes will need to be compensated. Cardno was successful in addressing these challenges while meeting time and budget constraints.
