Union Valley Bike Trail Extension Project

Rushing stream of water through valley

Cardno delivers significant engineering, environmental, permitting, and construction support services to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) as part of a recreational component requirements of the utility’s Upper American River Project (UARP) Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license conditions.

Cardno is developing final contract documents for construction of two separate segments (1.5 and 4.5 miles) for an extension of the Union Valley Bike Trail. Upon completion, this will create an approximately 12-mile-long continuous bike path between multiple campgrounds along the eastern and northern sides of the Union Valley Reservoir.

Challenging land features and sensitive habitats include several drainage/creek crossings, meadow/wetlands, steep cross slopes (up to 40%) and large rock outcroppings typical of the western slope of Sierra Nevada range.

Major civil design and planned structures include three bridge crossings (up to 80-foot spans), elevated boardwalks (approx. 6300-feet), open bottom arch culverts, rockery retaining walls, and rock face cut slopes.

Cardno is contracted to provide RFP solicitation/bid support services and engineering support to SMUD throughout construction of this bike path project.
