The International School

New school with stairway and landscape leading to it

Cardno worked with the design team to create a new classroom building at The International School’s urban campus.

The International School is located just south of downtown Portland on the edge of the north of the newly-revived SW Waterfront District. The school is bifurcated by two public streets climbing at greater than 15 percent slope.

Cardno’s creative civil engineering site design took advantage of these slopes to incorporate cascading stormwater basins, view corridors and wall-climbing opportunities for students. Additionally, the urban location necessitated extensive private utility coordination.

Portland General Electric was concurrently constructing transmission line improvements adjacent to the campus. Cardno facilitated design meetings with the utility companies to coordinate levels of impact to the site and construction schedule.
