Cardno’s ability to rapidly respond to clients’ needs and deploy significant resources from across the United States to meet tightening timeframes was exemplified by our Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) work on the State Road 20 upgrade in Georgia.
The State Road 20 is a major east-west arterial highway on the northern edge of Atlanta. This heavily used corridor often experiences major congestion and delays, which limits vehicular mobility and raises serious safety concerns.
In response, State Road 20 is being upgraded for approximately 24 miles between the western terminus of Interstate 575 in Cherokee County and the eastern terminus of State Road 400 in Forsyth County.
Cardno was commissioned as the design team’s senior utility consultant in 2012. Our first task was to complete the conceptual analysis of the corridor options in relation to potential utility conflicts. We completed a SUE Quality Level D investigation as well as a high-level utility relocation costs analysis.
Then, due to an unforeseen change to funding arrangements, the project’s schedule was substantially advanced. With a reduced timeframe to deliver the SUE Quality Level B investigation, we mobilized Cardno resources from across the country and expedited the work to meet the new deadline. As a follow on, we also completed a utility impact analysis and the SUE Quality Level A investigation.
