A great event means smooth traffic flow. Traffic management is an essential part of event planning from pedestrian safety to parking to setting up detours and alternative routes.

The Cardno traffic team have been responsible for providing the Traffic Management Plan for the Melbourne Cup Carnival since 2002. The event incorporates four race days, occurs over a week period in early November each year, with a crowd of 60,000 for each of the four days.

We understand the traffic ramifications to be considered before, during and after the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The Traffic team produce comprehensive traffic management plans to manage the traffic, keeping the roads safe so traffic can flow freely plus ensure there is sufficient space for access by emergency vehicles.

The event process requires careful planning and collaboration with stakeholders including internal and external clients, local councils and regulatory road authorities to ensure compliance with road authority requirements. The team are also involved in the preparation/delivery of event information to surrounding residents and businesses.

On event days, Cardno staff are on-site, checking and auditing traffic management strategies and are on hand to provide sound advice into the day-to-day running of the Carnival’s traffic management.
