Shirlington, an urban village, was developed in 1943 in Arlington County, Virginia due to its convenient location to Washington, D.C.
As originally designed, residents of Shirlington still enjoy a small-town atmosphere. Stores, theaters, and dining establishments are within walking distance on a one-block main street. Shirlington Village, an 11-story, 217,700 sf residential building with 62,300 sf parking, is located at the heart of the community.
Thirty-three duplex loft units are on the first three floors and 126 flat units are on the upper floors. Building amenities include a main lobby, community room, administrative offices and fitness center. An outdoor swimming pool and sun deck are located above the top level of the parking garage.
Cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete is utilized for the building’s structural system. The facade consists of a 4-inch brick veneer on light gage metal studs.
Cardno structural engineers provided effective solutions to the structural challenges of this project, including the setbacks at the 10th floor, the alignment of columns with apartments above the parking garage, the pool and pool deck, and a cantilevered foundation system due to the neighboring building being at the property line.
