Cardno provided detailed civil engineering design, along with geotechnical investigations, hydrology studies and landscape architecture master planning for this regional sports park and recreational open space, setting a benchmark in public facility provision.

Mills Park is a major sports and recreational facility in Beckenham, owned and operated by the City of Gosnells.

Cardno was engaged to undertake the detailed civil engineering design, along with the geotechnical investigations and hydrology studies. The landscape architecture master planning and detailed design were also undertaken by Cardno, to ensure a combined multi-disciplined approach was taken.

The brief was to redevelop the site to provide a unique regional picnic ground and play space with sporting facilities. Retaining and enhancing the degraded areas of the natural environment was essential. This project has demonstrated integration of the green infrastructure, including vegetation areas, water quality, irrigation management and functional design of Mills Park in revitalising the community recreation hub.

As a result of the successful redevelopment of Mills Park, the project recently won the 2018 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Western Australia award for Infrastructure and has also been named the Australian Leisure Facility of the Year in 2017 as part of a peak industry body, Parks and Leisure Australia - National Awards of Excellence. The Australian Institute of Project Management also recognised the redevelopment by awarding the Sustainable Project Award in 2016. The project has won a number of other awards for sustainability, leisure facilities and design excellence.

Mills Park has been a popular regional sports park since the late 1960's and is well used by the local community as a recreational open space. This was also the first public building in Australia to receive a 6-Star Green Star rating and is the first of its kind in Western Australia.
