Fontana Drive Bridge

Fontana Drive Bridge being constructed

Cardno completed the design and documentation for the new bridge on Fontana Drive over the Riparian corridor and are currently providing construction stage services.

The New Bridge is to be part of the new land development known as ‘The Gables’ in Box Hill, New South Wales.

Cardno's bridge team provided a range of consultancy services, including the development of the concept design into the detailed design stages, included the scour protection design. The complex bridge which caters for a range of services, whilst containing numerous architectural features, required extensive consultation and coordination with utility authorities, urban/landscape designers, lighting consultants and other design consultants, manufacturers and suppliers.

The Fontana Drive Bridge comprises a single 16.9m span using RMS spaced planks supported on vertical walled abutments. The bridge provides a 15.4m clear span over the Riparian corridor. The bridge cross-section comprises two 5m wide lanes, a 2m wide median, and two 2.5m wide shared paths on each side. The bridge deck has a total width of 20.8m. The bridge also provides for the passage of several utilities and services, encased in its concrete deck.

In addition to the bridge, approach retaining walls are required. The Northern and southern walls are approximately 14m and 30m in length respectively. The retaining walls are to be constructed as reinforced concrete cantilever base walls.

Fontana Drive Bridge ribbon detail being constructed

The bridge’s aesthetics is enhanced with two ‘ribbon’ shaped structures on either side of the bridge. The architectural ribbon features are triangular in section with varying widths and depths and are being constructed of weathered steel. To further improve the aesthetics the bridge elevation (sides) and soffit is to be wrapped in Alucobond cladding.

A grated light well in the median, coloured concrete pathways, patterned and textured concrete facades and walls, feature lighting to the ribbon and balustrade lighting, as well architectural designed handrails and balustrades are also added to improve aesthetics.

Cardno liaised with urban designers, civil and hydraulic designers, lighting consultants, geotechnical engineers, cladding suppliers and installers to achieve a well-coordinated detailed design that meets the clients brief and DA requirements.

Once complete, Fontana Drive Bridge will act as a connection between different areas of The Gables estate including access to the future Santa Sophie College. Residents will be able to access estate amenities such as lakes, playgrounds and shopping areas safely and with ease.
