Emergency Response for Vapor Release Integrity Investigation of Wells at Former Oil Field

Soil management and investigation at site of former oil field

Cardno’s rapid site assessment and remediation expertise contributed to the safe resolution of an emergency response triggered by a vapor release at a plugged well in the U.S. This successful resolution ensured protection of the neighboring community, reduced the client’s liability, and engaged regulatory stakeholders.

Our site assessment and remediation experts developed soil management and soil/soil vapor investigation plans and performed soil sampling, soil vapor well installation and sampling, and profiling. We also conducted round-the-clock perimeter exposure air monitoring, obtained relevant permits, and provided regulatory expertise and advocacy services to our client.

Additional responsibilities included the development of hazardous materials business and stormwater pollution prevention plans, excavation monitoring, reporting, stormwater inspections, and hazardous waste management.

Subsequent to the emergency response, the client elected to investigate the integrity of ten additional historically plugged and abandoned wells in the same field. Cardno was engaged to increase our role, including management of the environmental sampling, waste management, and regulatory compliance components of the project.

These services have included pre-excavation soil sampling, waste disposition plans, biological surveys and agency advocacy, grading permitting, air monitoring, waste management, preparation of reports, and restoration of the property.
