Des Plaines River Valley Preserves vegetation management

Cardno was responsible for invasive species management across 200 acres of native habitats in the Des Plaines River Valley Preserves in Illinois.

The majority of the project occurred in the rare dolomite prairies where federally endangered species are present. The two biggest sites for this project were at two dedicated Illinois Nature Preserves: Romeoville Prairie and Lockport Prairie. These prairies are home to wetlands, floodplains, and upland prairies.

Extreme care was needed on every visit so that there were no negative effects to these delicate ecosystems. Most of the work was performed using the hand-wick method of herbicide application, so there was no mortality on any off target species.

Additional treatments included mowing, foliar spraying, and basal bark. Cardno crews finished this project ahead of schedule and under budget.
