Albion Park Rail Bypass

Albion Park Rail, south of Sydney, experiences significant traffic congestion on the M1 Princes Motorway in peak periods, and is especially heavy at weekends and holidays.

The master plan for the adjacent urban area indicates extensive greenfield development over the next 30 years, significantly increasing traffic in the decades to come.

In response, a 9.5 kilometre bypass of the township of Albion Park Rail is planned by NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).

Cardno successfully partnered with Hyder, now Arcadis, to deliver the concept design and Environmental Impact Statement, again demonstrating our ability to work effectively in a joint venture on major transport infrastructure projects.

We were engaged to provide detailed traffic modelling to ensure the Albion Park Rail bypass facilitates had adequate access for local residents, while at the same time enough through traffic capacity to meet future traffic flow requirements to 2041 and beyond.

Due to the interdependence of the adjacent road network and large number of interchange choices, a complex options testing process was required. Utilising extensive traffic modelling software, Cardno also developed an innovative, large-scale Aimsun microsimulation model to optimise design and assess performance.

During the concept design process, the Aimsun model was invaluable in allowing the rapid testing and validation of multiple design options. The microsimulation video capability and traffic performance outputs greatly assisted communicating technical issues to not just RMS, but also the wider JV multi-disciplinary team. The model also helped to support a robust defence of the project during internal and external reviews of the business case.

Expressing its appreciation of the Cardno traffic team and our modelling expertise, RMS acknowledged the value of the Aimsun model in supporting the project from design to approval.

Since 2018, we have continued to assist during construction including contamination verification, environmental management, transport planning and consistency assessments.
