Living the dream in Regional Victoria: Courtney Bicknell, Graduate Engineer

Two days before the lockdown in Victoria last year, Courtney Bicknell, Engineering Graduate, commenced work at Cardno, now Stantec, in the graduate development program.  A daunting predicament for anyone, let alone someone starting their professional career.

However, since Cardno joined Stantec in December, opportunities have begun to unfold for Courtney and fellow graduates in the program.  They are starting a career with a company that has a network of global offices, so they can work where they want to live.

While Studying at Federation University in Ballarat, Courtney gained a placement with Regional Roads Victoria giving her exposure to the industry. During this time she encountered Cardno, now Stantec.

Whilst undertaking the process of applying for graduate positions Courtney was looking for an organisation that suited her lifestyle and location. Cardno, now Stantec, ticked the boxes.

“I wanted to work outside of a big city. Geelong really suits my lifestyle” adds Courtney

Developing networks and mentored by technical experts, Courtney is thriving in a supportive environment where she is empowered to grow and is valued for her contribution.

Courtney is now working on a variety of residential land development projects, with her work buddy Jack Wilson, Design Engineer. She has had great exposure to design work and has progressed very quickly.

“Jack and I talk most days. I’m really enjoying the design aspect of my job.

I'm currently working on a rural greenfield development project, the subdivision of a rural block.

I've had experience with utility design, making plans for future residential development water supply" says Courtney.

"Courtney is a breath of fresh air to our team. Whilst we acknowledge we have a young and growing regional unit, this has provided Courtney with opportunities far exceeding other graduates in years past.

With the aid of the graduate program and our internal mentor/mentee structure, we have seen Courtney's professional and technical abilities grow at an exponential rate. We look forward in seeing Courtney continue to grow, learn and provide meaningful work within regional Victoria or any of Stantec’s 400 offices worldwide" adds Angelo Magarelli, Urban Infrastructure Civil Design Lead, Geelong.
