Cardno wins national award for planning excellence

Cardno has collected a prestigious national prize recognising work on the Gasworks at Newstead Riverpark project in Brisbane.

The project won the From Plan to Place award at the Planning Institute of Australia’s National Awards for Excellence held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on Thursday, May 12.

Developed by Aveo, the initiative forms the centrepiece of the emerging high density Newstead Riverpark urban renewal precinct, and comprises the Gasworks shopping complex building and Gasometer Plaza (pictured).

Opened in 2013, the facilities were guided by the Gasworks at Newstead Riverpark Plan of Development, prepared by Cardno based on designs by Cox Rayner Architects.

The Gasworks at Newstead Riverpark includes a popular landscaped plaza based upon a restored 1873 gasometer frame, an adjacent supermarket-based shopping centre, four floors of offices and a gymnasium. The shopping centre mall is oriented towards the Gasometer Plaza, providing visual interest and seamless pedestrian integration.

Cardno project planning leader Jeff Humphreys said the final planning for Gasworks at Newstead Riverpark succeeded plans for the area going back to 1991.

“This development is the realisation of a central part of the vision for this area, worked on by Urban Renewal Brisbane in conjunction with private sector developers over many years, including major site amalgamation and remediation,” he said.

“The development finally resolved issues about public transport improvement, height, density and urban design, responding to the site’s contemporary city planning context.

“The plan’s preparation and high quality urban design outcomes are exemplars of successful collaboration between private and public-sector stakeholders in a strategically important, complex urban renewal setting.”
