2020 Indiana Historic Preservation Award for Archaeology awarded to Ryan Peterson

Senior Project Archaeologist located in Indianapolis IN

Senior Principal Archaeologist, Ryan Peterson

Ryan led Cardno’s cultural resources team in excavating and relocating a historic cemetery at the Indianapolis International Airport. The Bethel Cemetery project represented the largest cemetery to ever be archaeologically relocated in the State of Indiana.

Ryan and his team worked with the client and regulators on every aspect of the project, including coordination with family members, geophysical surveys, and archival research. Ryan received the award at the cemetery’s site.

In addition, the Indianapolis Airport Authority was named the winner of the Indiana Cemetery Award for its commitment to respectful relocation of the cemetery with proper consideration given to all parties.

“Ryan’s leadership and technical guidance on this project really stood out,” said Jeannie Regan-Dinius, Director of Special Initiatives for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. “Everything about this project was handled the right way and those efforts led to significant awareness of the cemetery’s history and relevance.”

Ryan is a principal investigator and the Midwest practice leader for Cardno’s cultural resources management team. He has more than 20 years of experience in cultural resource management, having completed projects throughout the eastern United States, Alaska, and the Marshall Islands.
