Marine Barracks Washington (MBW), DC 2015 Installation Master Plan

Location: Washington; United States; North America

Cardno has developed a new tool to guide future growth, improve operational readiness and ensure the long-term viability the Marine Barracks Washington (MBW).

The MBW Master Plan promotes secure and sustainable buildings in a walkable, campus-like environment, while enhancing the living and working environment for military and civilian personnel and the surrounding community. The planning process included an on-site workshop and planning charrette to develop a strong planning vision, key goals and measurable objectives using broad stakeholder input. Recommendations integrate current Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection policies, historic preservation guidelines, land-use practices, sustainability, transportation planning and energy-efficiency.

Key challenges for the team included creating a flexible and unified planning document that balanced mission changes, requirements shortfalls, infrastructure deficiencies, and historic preservation with quality-of-life needs and community integration. A key focus for the plan included analyzing five alternative sites for a proposed replacement Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) Complex to be located within walking distance of the Main Post in a rapidly growing area of Washington DC.
