Lindeman Island EIS

Location: Queensland; Australia; Australasia

Cardno coordinated the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a proposed $600 million redevelopment of the existing tourist resort at Lindeman Island.

Lindeman Island is located approximately 40 kilometres south-east from Shute Harbour and some 15 kilometres south of Hamilton Island. Since 1923 Lindeman Island has been used for tourism purposes and in 1992 a 225 room 3-star resort was opened by Club Med on the Island. The resort was subsequently closed in 2012.

White Horse Australia Lindeman Pty Ltd now proposes to redevelop the existing resort at Lindeman Island into a world class integrated tourist resort comprising three resorts (five star beach resort, six star spa resort and five star eco resort), tourist villas, village precinct, golf course, airstrip and safe harbour. The project is a "controlled action" for which an Environmental Impact Statement is required. Cardno is responsible for working with the project team, including Eastview and DBI Design, to prepare the Environmental Impact Statement.

The project is likely to create an average of 865 construction-related jobs each year on-site and off-site during the construction period and a further 300 full time equivalent jobs on the Island once operational.

New ecotourism opportunities are proposed including a coral planting program and a National Park and Great Barrier Reef Educational Centre.
