I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project

Location: Florida; United States; North America

Florida’s I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project involves reconstructing 21 miles of I-4 from Orange County to Seminole County.

Florida DOT–District V selected the public-private-partnership team I-4 Mobility Partners, which included Cardno, to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain this project. Cardno provided surveying and mapping, utility coordination and subsurface utility engineering services.

Cardno’s project manager coordinated up to 16 field crews simultaneously. This project adds four tolled express lanes while maintaining the existing free general use lanes. Construction is expected to take seven years; operations and maintenance will be for 40 years. The express lanes will operate with variable tolls, which will be adjusted to improve traffic flow throughout the corridor. Additional features include: 13 widened bridges, 74 replaced bridges and 53 new bridges, 15 reconstructed major interchanges, a distinctive pedestrian bridge as well as a variety of aesthetic elements to enhance the Central Florida landscape.

Although I-4 Ultimate reflects much innovation, it maintains and preserves the rich history of central Florida, carefully focused on minimizing impact to sites within the project limits listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is the largest transportation infrastructure project in the state’s history. It will connect communities, support economic growth, and enhance livability throughout the area, spotlighting central Florida’s uniqueness.
