Competitiveness Systems Strengthening Activity (CSS)

Location: Serbia, Republic of; UK/Europe

Through this four-year, USAID-funded project, Cardno is increasing Serbia’s competitiveness, generating export-led growth, and promoting greater integration with European and global markets.

A firm’s success in global markets depends on its ability to deliver a unique or higher-quality product more efficiently than its competitors. However, firm-level competitiveness is inextricably tied to industry and sector competitiveness – effective and sustainable gains can only be accomplished through changes that support all levels of the value chain (including input suppliers, producers, processors, and buyers, as well as support services and enabling environments).

Through the Competitiveness Systems Strengthening Activity (CSS), Cardno leverages relationships and capacities among value chain actors to improve cooperation and coordination, leading to the development of upgraded products and services. By improving both formal and informal linkages along the value chain, Cardno can reduce transaction costs, create economies of scale, and enable the sharing of skills and resources to enhance product quality through common production standards.

While initially focusing on the food processing sector, the CSS Activity is expected to result in a model that can eventually be applied across other sectors.
