The Flood Control District of Maricopa County received multiple complaints that flooding was occurring in an area of Tempe, Arizona.
To address the flooding issue, the Flood Control District of Maricopa County engaged Cardno to perform a two-dimensional hydrologic and hydraulic model of a six-square mile watershed using the modeling software FLO-2D. The model is a “rain on grid” approach to identify problematic flood prone areas in and around many old subdivisions and commercial areas that were largely developed between 1950 and 1970.
Cardno successfully identified and prioritised twelve flood-prone areas and is evaluating mitigation options to reduce flooding in the area. Cardno identified two-dimensional modeling protocols in a highly urbanised area, determined the best way to model a storm drain system and mitigated several problematic drainage areas.
