Jonathan Large

Market Sector Leader - Defence

In a varied career over more than twenty five years, Jonathan Large is one of Cardno’s most senior experts in Defence services. With an extensive background as a military engineer he has helped build roads, bridges and buildings in the remote Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea and has been deployed to East Timor to help deliver critical infrastructure and stabilisation projects.

Jonathan fell into engineering at a young age. Straight out of high school, he was accepted into the Royal Military College, Duntroon. Over a five year period he completed his degree in civil engineering and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Engineers.

“It was pretty much everything and anything you could imagine. One day we would be undergoing intensive military training and the next you could have your head in the books studying. It was an incredible experience that opened many doors for me professionally,” says Jonathan.

Today he is based in Townsville, and is the Cardno market leader for Defence. He has recently helped to deliver the Base Engineering Assessment Program for the Department of Defence which has involved the assessment of engineering services across 14 major sites throughout Australia.

As part of this work, he collaborates with multiple Divisions and Business Units across Cardno to combine a diverse array of skills and experience.

“There is never a dull moment. I am involved in leading multi-disciplinary teams in technically demanding projects and we are seeing our efforts in supporting Defence-related projects gaining momentum,” he says.

“We are undertaking a wide range of projects including environmental assessments, facilities for simulator projects and multi-disciplinary design services. We are always looking at using our combined global expertise to find better ways of solving our clients’ problems.”

According to Jonathan, there are several qualities people should develop if they want to succeed in professional life.

“Be a good listener is first and foremost,” he says.

“From my military background I am also very passionate about leading by example and helping our people to develop their own skills in leadership and management.  One area that I focus on is communication skills, particularly in the area of writing. Engineers have to be good writers and be able to clearly articulate the technical aspects of their work.”

Now approaching his tenth anniversary with Cardno, Jonathan says his career is much more than a job.

“Whether I’m part of a team helping clients solve their challenges and reduce risk, or giving staff the opportunities to learn. Every day, the things I do make a difference and this is what enjoy the most.”
