Civil engineering is the foundation upon which Cardno was built, and for 70 years we have been providing our clients with innovative, environmentally-aware and cost-effective solutions.
We have the depth and breadth of civil engineering expertise necessary to customise solutions for specific projects, irrespective of scope or size.
Our dedicated teams comprise experienced professionals delivering integrated services across commercial, land development, infrastructure, water and construction projects in both the public and private sectors.
Working closely with Cardno’s other in-house experts, our civil teams have delivered the following projects across Australia:
New South Wales
Lendlease, Sydney CBD
Barangaroo is one of the most significant waterfront greening projects anywhere in the world, transforming a vacant industrial site into a new thriving community for Sydney. Being the last harbourside location able to be redeveloped in the city, it will return more than three hectares of water area, including two new coves, to the world famous harbour. The site aims to be water positive, exporting more water than it uses. As well as the internal and external civil works that integrate climate change impacts on all stormwater systems, Cardno is also preparing technical support for the investigation into black water treatment and general water harvesting and reuse.
Willowdale Residential Subdivision
Willowdale is a new suburb in Sydney’s South West Growth Centre and will be home to over 12,000 residents. The new suburb includes low and medium residential, retirement living, a school, community centre, recreational facilities and a new shopping centre. Cardno was engaged to undertake due diligence investigations for the client to acquire the site and obtain rezoning, then continued with project management, civil design, survey, and traffic and flooding assessment through the delivery phases.
Tiger Brennan Drive
Department of Infrastructure, Northern Territory, Darwin
In a bid to improve traffic flow into the Darwin CBD, the Northern Territory and Australian governments are funding the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive as part of the Nation Building 2 Program. Cardno, together with SMEC, was engaged to provide concept and detailed design and documentation for the final stage of the Tiger Brennan Drive duplication between Woolner Road and Berrimah Road.

Transcity JV, Brisbane
Cardno, in a design alliance with GHD and URS, was engaged by Transcity JV to carry out the tender and detailed design for construction of the Legacy Way tunnel, a 4.6-kilometre tunnel connecting the Inner City Bypass with the Western Freeway in Brisbane. Cardno’s scope of works included: road design including traffic design and coordination; civil design works including bridge, tunnel, structural design; drainage design – operation and construction; service relocations; construction site design and layouts; environmental approvals and management plan; hydrology design – operation and construction; durability and materials engineering; electrical and mechanical design; and geotechnical design and site investigations. Legacy Way Tunnel opened in June 2015.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Grantham
When a series of floods hit Queensland in January 2011, the town of Grantham was all but destroyed. In an unprecedented move, and a first for Australia, the Lockyer Valley Regional Council purchased private land adjoining the existing Grantham township to permanently relocate the town, offering residents the opportunity to move to higher, safer ground. Commissioned as the Lead Consultant and working closely with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, Cardno managed the preparation of Grantham’s Master Plan. Whilst the ‘Strengthening Grantham’ planning process proceeded, detailed engineering reporting and designs were underway which allowed a fast tracked construction of the new community.

Cardno is working with Mirvac for the redevelopment of the Eastern Golf Club in Doncaster, providing civil, traffic, water and geotechnical engineering services. Cardno introduced the site to Mirvac, which is expected to yield 800 residential dwellings at completion. The site is highly constrained due to topography, the requirement for significant vegetation to be retained, and adjacent dwellings. With a focus on sustainable design, the project has been successful in receiving UDIA EnviroDevelopment certification across all six elements; ecosystems, waste, energy, materials, water and community.
Princes Highway East
Vic Roads, Sale
As the primary route between Melbourne and Gippsland, the Princes Highway supports a number of key industries and is an important route for tourist traffic travelling to and from the Gippsland Lakes, the high country and the south coast of New South Wales. The larger project to duplicate the Princes Highway from Traralgon to Sale is being implemented to improve road safety, access and transport efficiency. Cardno in conjunction with a contractor has designed a 2.5-kilometre section of the Princes Highway upgrade from Fulham to Sale. This project required several aspects of design, including geometric, service proving and relocation, approvals from VicRoads and the catchment management authority, and hydrology and stormwater conveyance.
City of Gosnells, Beckenham
Mills Park is a major sports and recreational facility in Beckenham, Western Australia, owned and operated by the City of Gosnells. It is being redeveloped to ensure it remains an important hub for the local community and sports groups that utilise the facility. Cardno was engaged to undertake the detailed civil engineering design, geotechnical investigations, hydrology studies and landscape architecture master planning, and is now undertaking project management, contract administration and construction supervision during the 18-month construction phase.

Todd Property Development, Whitby
Cardno was commissioned to design, obtain approvals, and manage the construction and commissioning of the Duck Creek master planned community in Whitby, near Wellington. The project involved the realignment of 1.2 kilometres of an existing stream within stringent environmental constraints, extensive earthworks, new bridges and roads, underground services, and landscaping works for the 200-lot, staged development.

The Hub Hornby Redevelopment
Shopping Centre Investments Limited, Christchurch
Cardno was engaged as the lead resource management, survey and civil engineering consultant for The Hub Hornby project, which included the realignment of Chalmers Street and its intersection with SH1 to facilitate expansion of The Hub Hornby shopping mall. This required the existing services and vehicle access to be maintained to surrounding businesses to allow continual trading while the new services were constructed. Limited physical access to various services and parts of the site restricted the design and construction options, and required accurate coordination and communication with the civil and building contractors to ensure minimal impact on the operation of The Hub, surrounding businesses and existing transport network.
