Wellingon Airport Extension
To meet international safety standards, Brian Perry Civil has begun construction of a safety area at the Southern end of the existing runway, technically termed a Runway End Safety Area, or RESA. A RESA provides an extra margin of safety beyond the runway proper to allow for an under-shooting or over-running aircraft.
Cardno has been employed as a sub contractor to provide the survey setout and control for the duration of the project.
The survey setout work is required during the following facets of the project:
- The realignment of Moa Point Road
- Diversion of existing services and the construction of a 175m long road/precast concrete underpass
- Construction of a 160m wave protection wall parallel to the new underpass and
- The realignment of the existing runway and associated infrastructure
Waitangi Park redevelopment
- Chaffers Park area, Wellington Waterfront
What used to be known as "Chaffers" in Wellington has been turned into a big and new urban park. Six hectares in total, Waitangi Park covers almost 30% of the waterfront completed. This park provides recreation options like skateboard ramps and play area for young kids. It contains a central open field for different events and new buildings for indoors activities.
Cardno has provided all surveying services for this project. The survey work comprised:
- Initial data capture for design,
- Volume computations,
- Establishment of Horizontal and Vertical Control,
- Setout of approximately 6000 points including: Graving Dock declamation, Bridge setout, Waterside Promenade, Waka Landing Boardwalk, subterranean wetland and all associated services.
Regional Hospital in Wellington, Newtown
Wellington Hospital, in Newtown, is the largest facility operated by the DHB and is one of five major tertiary hospitals in New Zealand. It is also the region's main emergency and only trauma service. Wellington Hospital is currently undergoing redevelopment with a new hospital building under construction and refurbishments planned for other buildings that are being retained for clinical purposes. The new building is due to be completed at the end of 2007.
With construction running over an 18 month period, Cardno is involved in all the daily setout for the contractor Fletcher Construction Limited. One full time field party and one part time field party complete the setout work which includes;
- Establishment of Gridlines offsets, and Vertical Datum's,
- As-built survey of all constructed structures,
- Vertical Control of the building between floors.
Five permanently mounted prisms on surrounding buildings provided the survey control, from which the surveyor can setup in any convenient position (Local Resection) to setout the required marks. With the site being 150m x 100m the ability to establish a survey control setout point in any location to millimeter accuracy saves the surveyor a considerable amount of setup time. This enables the required information to be setout quicker for the contractor while still satisfying the required accuracy standards.
Holiday Inn Hotel construction
- Featherston Street, Wellington
A new four-star Holiday Inn Hotel is currently being built in Downtown Wellington. The new hotel is the only Holiday Inn to be built in Wellington and is positioned at the northern end of Featherston Street.
Cardno has undertaken all setting out and as built survey work on this project. The survey work has involved initial set out and as built of all piles, set out of steel stauncheons, edge of concrete positions on cantilever slabs, grid offset positions on each of the 17 floors of the building, and checking vertical control of the building.
All survey work has been completed using a high specification Leica 1205 instrument. The survey control has been based on a series of reflective stickers placed on surrounding buildings. The origin point for each new floor has been determined by resection from these stickers ensuring each floor is independent from the others and minimising any systematic errors that may occur.
Site 7 Kumutoto Building
The Site 7 Kumutoto building consists of two parts in an L-shaped configuration. The 6-metre tall ground floor of the larger part of the 'L' will be constructed entirely of glass, allowing views through the building out to the sea,and views into the sheltered plaza on the other side. Meridian Energy's head office will be located on the top three stories of the building.
Considerable research has gone into optimising the design including wind testing, sun and shade studies, pedestrian route analysis and the site's relationship with its neighbours. Potential uses, views and energy efficiency were also considered in Site 7's design. Site 7 will be New Zealand's first office building constructed to Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) standards and will become a Wellington and New Zealand landmark.
Cardno has provided all surveying services for the project.
- Initial data capture for design
- Land transfer subdivision of the area
- Setting out all piles
- Establishing Gridlines, offsets and vertical datum on all floors
- As-built survey of all constructed structures
