Heritage Significance

Bridges with heritage significance are important to our society as they provide evidence of our cultural heritage. Heritage assessments are implemented to assess relative levels of heritage significance against two types of criteria – the Nature of Significance and the Degree of Significance.

The Nature of Significance

  • Historic – Relates to the bridge’s historical association with the pattern of our cultural history
  • Aesthetic – Relates to the bridge’s positive visual or sensory appeal, landmark qualities and/or creative or technical excellence
  • Social – Relates to the bridge’s social, spiritual and cultural association with a particular community
  • Technical/Research – Relates to the bridge’s contribution or potential contribution to an understanding of our cultural history

The Degree of Significance

  • Rarity – Relates to the bridge representing a rare, endangered or unusual aspect of our history and cultural environment
  • Representative – Relates to the bridge representing an important class of significant bridges

Level of Historical Significance

Following the heritage assessment of a bridge, a level of heritage significance is applied to it, according to the importance established.
